Establishment of Plastination Laboratory (Egeplastinat)

The establishment of the Plastination Laboratory began in 2010 at Ege University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Anatomy, with the appointment of Okan Bilge, Assoc Prof, MD and Servet Çelik, Specialist, MD. After a few months of research, the Egeplastinat project was designed, the project was supported by the Ege University Scientific Research Coordinatorship and the infrastructure works started. Ege University Ethics Committee approval and Department of Anatomy permissions were obtained for plastinate production. After the necessary authorizations, the vacuum device was designed and manufactured with local companies at the beginning of 2011. In December 2011, the devices were installed in the laboratory, and in February 2012, vacuum device pressure tests were carried out, and the desired targets were achieved. Prior to the pressure tests, the first plastinate procedure trials were started in January 2012, and the first water purification (dehydration) started. By July, the first vacuum impregnations were made and the first plastinates were obtained at the end of October. The plastinates it produces have started to be used in the Faculty of Medicine and in-house courses. Since its establishment, Egeplastinat has produced many platinates including human, plant and animal. These plastinates are actively used in education and research. In addition, Egeplastinat opened its doors to other institutions and started to develop education and research projects. Egeplastinat continues to produce and serve plastinate for educational and research purposes by paying attention to ethical values.

Purposes of Egeplastinat

Egeplastinat aims to produce plastinate and to contribute to the science, education and economy of humanity and the country by developing plastination research. Egeplastinat aims to produce educational materials for medical and health faculty, other undergraduate and postgraduate education programs which uses anatomical organic materials. Extending and improving the life and use of cadavers, eliminating the lack of cross-sectional anatomy education materials, and developing, disseminating and training plastination research are among the objectives.
